Under Construction
I just finished touring the unbelievable high school stadium being nearing completion in my town of Allen, TX. So much work, sophistication, and refinement that went into this project -- it got me thinking about my own football project, which has been years in the making.
Every offseason, just as I did as an offensive coordinator, I go back into my system materials (playbook, powerpoint presentations, and teaching materials) and make necessary editions. This offseason was even more comprehensive, as I entertained the real possibility of re-entering the fray as an offensive coordinator. Many of the people reading this will have some familiarity with my offensive system from my book or various football articles I've written on the web. This past season, I've been working on streamlining the system itself, and bolstering teaching methods and materials. I'm different from a lot of "spread" guys -- I believe in shifting, motioning, and multiple personnel groupings. I've always believed in the value of TE/H-Back type people for the stressors it places on the integrity of a defensive structure. And I have always believed in all eligible receivers being legitimate parts of the quarterbacks progression in every dropback pass -- meaning the passer will have a primary focus, and then complimentary receivers to come open as his eyes come to them.
So, the challenge was maintaining the integrity of the system, yet making things more user friendly than ever. The result:
- Overhauled formation terms and also re-defined alignment rules to result in shorter vierbiage AND easier learning.
- Refined run game and play action designations to eliminate the need for calling "GUN" or "UNDER CENTER"
- Streamlined certain structures passing game in an effort to reduce learning burden
- New answers for zone blitz
- Refined and developed teaching tools for intstallation and coach's development in the system
I'm very excited about the final product -- just as the folks of Allen, TX are about their new stadium.
